Techno-ly Legal: Who are you?

2009

I am as multi-faceted as any woman, but I have to admit I did not always know what path I wanted to take or where I was going. I was born and raised in Austin, Texas to a single parent mother who always encouraged me to follow my dreams, wherever they may lead me.  I love art, music, travel, learning language, culture, technology, the internet, reading about women’s rights and fighting for every cause that is close to my heart.

While in undergrad at the University of Texas at Austin, I was fortunate enough to live and study in Spain for a summer. At that point in my life, I was sure I wanted to pursue international law. I took as many Spanish classes as I could and began studying French in preparation for the stringent requirements of a job as an international attorney. It was around this time that I worked for a travel company and sent numerous students abroad to Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, China, France, and Australia. However, I could not help feeling my attention was constantly being pulled away toward the interactive website and social networking side of the travel sales.

My job at the study abroad company evolved and I was no longer solely sending students abroad to foreign countries, I was also managing the company's website, building weblogs, and helping to build an online presence for the company I was working for. It was at this time, that I received an opportunity to work at Apple, Inc. At this point, my desire to learn and build an online community for my causes and passions was insatiable.

When I was a senior in college I had the opportunity to be a part of the Liberal Arts Council and was the student Departmental Representative for the Women and Gender's Studies Department. It was in this student position that I learned the importance of women's issues and communication. I also had the opportunity to take Dr. Sarah Weddington's Gender Based Discrimination course at the University of Texas at Austin. It was in that class that I really became passionate for the law. Dr. Weddington stood before our class and told us stories of how her legal classes were comprised of mainly men and how she overcame adversity in the legal field. Dr. Weddington stressed the importance of leadership constantly. After completing Dr. Weddington's legal class, I was fortunate enough to also have the opportunity to take her leadership class as well and I learned the importance of strong women leaders in communities and the impact a strong leader can have on a community and its success.

I just completed my first year of law school in Chicago, Illinois, and I have decided to use what I have learned as a world traveler, a woman's rights advocate, a computer geek and a passionate young law student to communicate with the world via the internet. I feel the internet can enable young women, who were and are like myself, to find a path which they can follow so they can advance their skills and draw from their multi-faceted curiosities to create a better world. In a nutshell, I want to talk, inspire, create, communicate and learn through the internet. I want the internet to always be a place where insatiable curiosity can be lead down a path of success, especially for young people.

Just enough for you to know...
